The Sennheiser HD 650 is widely regarded as top of the line headphones that cost under $1,000. They stopped manufacturing them in 2009 but audiophiles still talk about them. So when Sennheiser teamed up with the online marketplace Massdrop, they created the Massdrop x Sennheiser HD 6XX headphones. The limited edition release sold out today a few hours after opening for business.
Limited Edition Sennheiser HD 6XX Headphones
Massdrop is a new kind of web service that acts as a middleman between consumers and retailers. Users vote for the products they would like to see and then the company has the option to release merchandise for sale on the Massdrop website at a discounted price. The San Francisco based start up was founded by Steve El-Hage in 2012. Last year Business Insider reported they have over one million users. Since their user base tends to be specialists they usually deal with highly regarded brands.
The Sennheiser HD 6XX has the same great sound as the HD 650 but with updates and improvements. Rather than gray the 6XX is a deep midnight blue that is darker and more dramatic. Note that the Massdrop logo is silk-screened on the inside of the headband, just above the right cup. The serial number is located on the other side above the left cup. By popular request the cable has been shortened from ten feet to six feet, and the 1/8-inch plug fits the everyday laptop much better.
Normally this product would sell for about $500, but the Massdrop edition was priced at $250 in accordance with the service’s policy.
